"Narrow Escape — A journalist's true story of survival, exile and the unbroken fight for truth."
The story begins in Mogadishu, where my career started during a period of political turmoil, militia dominance and widespread corruption. My reports focused on uncovering facts that powerful actors did not want exposed. As my work gained impact, the pressure escalated — followed by threats, smear campaigns, arrests, harassment and multiple assassination attempts designed to silence my investigations.
When survival became uncertain, I fled to protect my family and continue my work. My escape to the Netherlands marked a new chapter — not an end. In exile, I rebuilt my journalistic mission, continuing to report on corruption, organized crime, political abuses and human rights violations for both Somali and international audiences.
At its core, "Narrow Escape” is not simply a survival story. It is a testimony to the responsibility of journalism in societies where power resists accountability. The memoir reflects on the emotional, professional and ethical weight of investigative reporting — and on the global struggle for press freedom and the right to tell the truth.
The book is currently in its final editing phase and is expected to be published in 2026.
